Our little signer has quite the vocabulary! Teddy has been signing since he was about 8 months old. His first sign was more, asking for more Wendy's Frosty...my kid has great taste. Then he asked for more fruit in front of my whole teaching staff. I was one PROUD momma!!! Since then he's taken off signing. What amazes me is not only the communication aspect of it, but it's like I get to peek into his brain and see what he really knows. The words he is signing, he could NEVER say at this age. But when he sees something that looks like a horse, he looks at me, signs horse with a questioning look on his face. Sometimes he's right, sometimes it's a goat. I'm able to tell him no, goat. He is able to get confirmation or clarification for himself in a way that would be impossible without signing. One day after school, as soon as we got out of the car, he signed eat. He usually doesn't eat for another 2 hours. Did that sign just save me 2 hours of a whiney hungry little monster? Probably! He's also started signing two words together. He will say more please or more eat/drink. Since Teddy has decided to take his time in actually saying words, I am so THANKFUL we signed with him. And if one more person tells me he's not talking because we signed with him, they just might get the litany of research I've done on the subject proving otherwise flying at their head! Just kidding...sort of! ;)
